The Gen4 variant is one of the more popular versions, with a different grip texture and a larger magazine version. The Gen4 17 has real controls and an all-metal no-drop magazine, just like the real steel version. The deep serrations on the back make sliding the shelf easy, and the textured grip feels great.

For a long time, the GLOCK G46 was a well-kept secret and could only be found on tenders. For the first time, the Austrian manufacturer offered a pistol with a rotating barrel and a knockback system. We tested a new pistol from the German state police of Saxony-Anhalt. Read on to find out how it fares on the shooting range!

The G46 is GLOCK's answer to the Technical Requirements (TR) for service pistols in German police forces. It must have come a bit late, as most of the German federal states have long since acquired new generation service pistols. However, GLOCK scored at least one point in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt (see our article). There, approximately 8,600 G46 pistols will be released through 2021. Rumors persisted that the TR for the police at the time was deliberately written in such a way that the internationally successful Austrian "squad leader" would have to sit down.
Also found on the G46 are the cocked serrations in the nose slide area and the slide stop bar on the right.
A key point in the technical requirements was the fact that the pistol could be disassembled without pulling the trigger, something Glock has so far failed to do. After passing security, it's not a major flaw for an experienced shooter, but police may see it differently. At the very least, you can teach a training principle that the trigger is only for shooting. This also explains the conspicuous mechanism on the back of the G46's slider, which sparked a lot of rumors when the first images of the G46 circulated. A fire selector was quickly suggested, but the truth is more obvious, if less emotional, than the shoot down function. Of course, the pistol can only be uncocked after the slide is pulled back a little. Therefore, accidental drops, such as in the holster, are absolutely impossible. To disassemble the pistol, you also need to operate a small lever on the left side of the grip, for which manual safety on various internet forums is excellent.
The real new territory for the Glock was indoors when the pistol was disassembled. While all other pistols from the Austrian manufacturer use the Browning-SIG-Petter locking system, the G46 is based on a rotating barrel. However, this has nothing to do with specific technical requirements. According to GLOCK, this principle has been considered for a long time because it allows for a lower barrel axis. Some manufacturers have tried swivel systems in their pistols in the past, such as the B&T TSP, Colt All American, Beretta 8000 Cougar, or Mauser M2, all of which have now disappeared from the market. Currently, the Italian Beretta PX-4Storm and the Slovakian Grand Power K100 can still be found.

Compared to the G19 (left), it's easy to see how low the barrel axis can go with the twisting action.
The Roth-Steyr 1907 was the first rotating barrel pistol to be produced in "larger" numbers, although the genius inventor John Moses Browning patented it as early as 1897 . There's also a partially preloaded trigger, just like the GLOCK's trigger. Quite an interesting pistol, impressively demonstrating what was already possible with the apparently limited production capabilities of the time. Even the Roth-Steyr pistols inevitably closed the circle to Austria. By the way, rotary pistols are said to be more accurate because the barrel doesn't tilt or move backwards like the Browning-SIG-Petter system, but only makes a rotary motion. Swivel clamping systems are reported to be subject to severe wear, especially if the clamping surfaces or corresponding material properties are not selected correctly. According to the manufacturer, both the clamping surface and the clamping material have been optimized. According to GLOCK, the Ulm Proof House certification showed that three pistols, each containing 10,000 rounds of reloading, had shown no anomalies such as cracks, damage, or measurable wear other than flawless function (only 5 arrests in total ).
Anyone shooting a G46 for the first time will not be impressed with its trigger quality. Looking at TriggerScan clearly shows that we need about 137.56 oz / 3900 grams of pull and about 0.59" / 15 mm of trigger travel to break the trigger. But unfortunately, that's the state of the technical requirements, with a trigger resistance of at least 30 N, Corresponds to a trigger pull of approximately 104 oz/2950 g. According to TR, the trigger travel must also be between 0.39"-0.59"/10-15 mm, at least for the first shot. Since we are currently on the specs, it should also be mentioned Trigger return must be at least 0.157"/4mm. Whether this makes it absolutely easier for the user to hit the target, or if, conversely, it makes handling easier, remains to be seen where the pistol is safer. This is a rather rhetorical question for manufacturers or users, who can only take it for granted. As an option, GLOCK also offers the G46 with a trigger pull of 88.18 oz/2, 5 kg and less trigger travel.
Although the GLOCK 46 looks slightly more complex, care has been taken to have as few individual parts as possible in keeping with the GLOCK philosophy. Thus, the last descendant of the Deutsch-Wagram consists of 37 individual parts, thus only 3 more than the G19. By the way, if you want to know more about the G46 and its rotation system, you can take a closer look at the published patent EP 3179193A1. We determined the footprint of the 0.014"/0.36mm striker striking the copper compression cylinder using a chamber gauge provided by Triebel, and the footprint was nearly perfectly centered. By the way, TR specifies a minimum runout of 0.011" / 0.3mm and a maximum runout of 0.007" / 0.2mm.

However, the striker unit cannot be fully withdrawn, so it cannot be lost. Of course, this kind of operation can only be done when the slideshow is open...
The G46 is very similar in size to the G19, so the magazine holds 15 rounds. The handle immediately catches the eye thanks to the extended grip. The extremely wear-resistant nDLC (diamond-like carbon) coating that is standard on the fifth generation is also present in this service version. The magazine release button is reversible for left-handed use, and the slide stops are on either side, just like the GLOCK Gen5 pistol. The 100mm long barrel features the new GLOCK Marksman Barrel (GMB) profile for greater accuracy. The distinctive spear shape of the striker until Gen4 has given way to a round shape. Our test pistol was equipped with fixed iron sights with fluorescent dots.
Look at the cam groove, showing the path the cam moves. Additionally, the feed ramp is located here, ensuring that the cartridges only rise slightly from the magazine.
