Redstone Arsenal Visitor Center - Anyone doing business at Navy, NASA or other Fed posts is expected to get some relief Monday from the grand opening of a new Visitor Center at the east entrance of Martin Road Gate 1.

It will ease congestion and take pressure off the arsenal's only visitor center at 9 Rideout Road/Research Park Boulevard near Highway 565, said arsenal commander Jim Rogers.

"This building is indicative of how we're thinking ahead, preparing for the onslaught of more people coming," Rogers said. "Then we'll adjust easily and it won't be so painful to get into this place."

In addition to transporting visitors, both centers will be able to process permanent vehicle registrations and security badges.

"We were missing something of this cyber from the east side of the Arsenal, like we have over Gate 9," he said.

Pastorelli said Redstone is working with state officials to get new signs on I-565, US 72 or US 431 "to better tell which way to put the arsenic in," he said. "We are working on it."

The new visitor center is a case of building on Ars' past to prepare for the future. It includes the original 1,700 square foot structure that went up in 1961 as the "Control and Identification Building" and was expanded to 1,455 square feet in 1963.

It closed in the 1990s when the "plating" operations were moved elsewhere. In the past year, the building has been gutted, given a new roof, electrical and mechanical systems, expanded and remodeled to become a visitor center with six processing stations - including one with wheelchair access - and lobby seating for 87.

The old red "REDSTONE ARSEN" sign above the door has been updated and is displayed through the back lobby as visitors enter the building.

And an original wooden telephone from 1963 has been refurbished and placed in the lobby, complete with a heavy duty black rotary phone.
