f22 take off

F22 Take Off - In April, one of the US Air Force's F-22 Raptors. crashed shortly after takeoff and slid more than a kilometer down the runway. Now the service has revealed what went wrong: the pilots gave the wrong takeoff speed.

On April 13 of this year, an F-22 fighter jet took off from Naval Air Station Fallon in Nevada for a TOP GUN exercise. The pilot of the Raptor, part of the 90th Fighter Squadron at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska, took off at 120 knots. Second

, the F-22 landed going 23 knots slower than the recommended speed, enough to lift the aircraft off the runway, but not to keep it airborne.

All airplanes have a minimum takeoff speed, and that number varies greatly depending on aircraft design and takeoff weight. Local conditions are also affected, including temperature, air density, altitude and runway steepness. As a result, the same jet may have different recommended takeoff speeds on consecutive days.

In this case, not only did the pilot take off prematurely, but the official's recommended takeoff speed was wrong. After the pilot raised the landing gear, the jet dropped to the ground, sliding 6,514 feet down the runway before coming to a complete stop. The pilot quickly exited the jet without injury.

Why don't pilots train to take off at a guaranteed safe speed? In times of war, airfields will be attacked by enemy bombs and missiles, especially airfield denial weapons such as the German JP233 (see above). These attacks could shorten the probable useful life of an airport. Training to operate in combat conditions means using as few runways as possible, with a safe margin of error, of course. In this case, a series of mistakes erased that margin for error, and the result was an F-22 Raptor that became the most expensive sled in the world.

The Air Force Accident Investigation Board also ruled that the pilot raised the aircraft's landing gear prematurely and that the daily briefing was inadequate. It also found that "the organization's overconfidence in the aircrew, formal training is not adequate, and there is an organizational acceptance of faulty landing technique in the F-22."
