Best Compact Handguns
Many of today's handguns pack 10 or more rounds of 9mm into a polymer frame that fits in a pocket. These guns usually have better sights and triggers—and more often than not, are designed to pair with a reflex-style electronic sight. So why would you choose less capacity for the heavy business of concealed carry?
What Is The Best Compact 380 Pistol?
Truth be told, there is a vacuum in handgun selection, and many older models look better than the rest. And they still bake well. No one is going to force you to carry it instead of a newer design, but if you want and still be well armed. This is America, by God.
So how did I come up with this list of classes? By making my own strict rules. The 1911 is a classic pistol, but requires a large pocket to conceal it. Detective Special isn't here because Colt isn't doing it right now. (I wish they were). All of these guns are still being made (although production is limited), and I have personal experience with each of them. Since they are classics, I bet a lot of other people are too.
There is another .380 on this list that gets all the glory, and I'll talk a little more about it. But I like those Berettas better. The medium-sized series includes the 84 FS Cheetah, which features a Model 86 tip-up barrel with a 13-round double-stack magazine. Other 80 series guns are available in .32 ACP and .22 Long Rifle, including the .22 Model 87 BB that I have personally owned for many years. That gun was made in Italy, and I paid a lot more for it after I found it used on GunBroker 10 years ago. Unlike many smaller .22 automatic pistols, this one has a jewel quality, with the slide feeling like it is gliding over the polished ball bearings. This is one of the most reliable .22 LR autoloaders I have ever shot, and accurate too. I frog hunt and fish because, as the old saying goes, you can't give reds the good stuff. Loaded with CCI stingers, 15-yard bullfrogs are in trouble.
The Series 80 is described as a scaled 92FS, and while they share some aesthetic similarities, they are not the same gun. Cheetahs can be damaged and although they are SA/DA, they do not have a decocking safety like the Model 92. My 87 (and I assume others) can "cock and lock" with the hammer back and safety. It also has a magazine disconnect safety, which makes it worse than a feature I have strong moral opposition to.

Some people carry rimfires for protection, but I don't (which is why guns like the 21A Bobcat - which I also own - are not on this list). But my 87 is very balanced, easy to shoot, and
I decided a long time ago that I would grab one of the .380 ACP guns if I ever found one sitting on a shelf used. Used cheetahs are not cheap so it may take some time. The guns are still being made but apparently, Beretta is only bringing them into the states in limited numbers.
. Hollywood appeal aside, the Ruger LCP's of the world are a fraction of the size and price and in the same caliber, you might think the Cheetah is obsolete, and I hope so that you do that. You might see a used one for sale and pass it on - and I'll buy it myself.

The Remington Model 95 came next, and it's the over/under double barrel that most people think of when they hear the word. Perhaps the ugliest handgun in history, synonymous with saloons and brothels where a bad case of syphilis won't kill you, the .41 may be a short round of fire. Derringer.
The elimination of the Model 95 did little to improve the image of the Derringer. I once paid a pawn shop owner $65 for a Davis Derringer in .22 LR, which was sold with a disclaimer: "There is no guarantee on that piece of paper." He explained it perfectly.

I've heard people scoff at the idea of a "snake gun," but they're mostly Yankees who don't live around poisonous snakes. Texans certainly understand, and there is no doubt why so many .410 Derringers are being sold.
New Concealed Carry Handguns For 2022
These guns are heavy for their size and only hold two shots. But the smooth profile and small dimensions make them very easy to conceal - the same thing that has made the Remington a popular gun for more than 70 years. But the Bond Arms versions are reliable, safe, and easier to shoot than you might think. (The recoil from a .357 shown isn't much different than a snubby holster.) You can sweat them all your life and expect them to shoot. Both of these shots are sometimes available in a caliber recommended for bear protection, even a step up from the firearm.41.
Many people who know more about handguns than I do still rely on J-frame revolvers for everyday concealed carry, and the Model 36 "Chief's Special" is the OG. According to Smith & Wesson, the five-shot .38 Special debuted in 1950 at the International Association of Chiefs of Police Conference, where the gun got its name. The J-frame revolver became one of the most popular personal defense and concealed carry firearms ever made—and remains so today.
When I was a kid, the S&W .38 was the most "snubnose" gun the good guys had for self-defense. My grandfather wasn't in law enforcement and he wasn't a gun guy either, but he was kind of independent. He carried a Model 36 in his coat pocket every day and affectionately called it his "five-hole rotator". He comes from a coal mining background, as do all old men. does he hang around. Like him, most of them weren't gun guys, but they were all armed with .38s. I remember seeing the blued frame, thin wooden grip and snubbed barrel and found it deadly and dangerous, but a tool that even good-natured men could carry.
There are many variations of the J-frame. I own four of them, including a pair of air pressure .38s that I carry frequently, and a stainless Model 63 "kit gun" in .22 long rifle. But the Model 36 is still the best gun in the lineup. A modern restoration of the original Chiefs Special, available in the S&W Classics line. It was upgraded with .38 +P capacity and a transfer bar and framed firing pin (the original had hammered firing pins). Unlike the originals, the Classic Series gun also had a framed safety lock.
