Before retiring, Botashev was a fighter-bomber pilot and eventually commanded the Russian Air Force (roughly the size of three US Air Force squadrons and 72 aircraft). He is rated as a "gunner" or professional pilot with 15-17 years of experience.
However, his career was cut short in 2012 due to a tragic incident involving an Su-27 fighter.
