deers id card requirements

Deers Id Card Requirements - When your partner joins the military, a lot happens. You're separated while they're in their basic military training and they're learning new things and then there's the military world to think about. Or, your new partner is already in the military and you are learning a new life all at once. One of the first steps as a military spouse is to obtain a Department of Defense uniformed service identification card, commonly called your military ID.

If you were married when your spouse left for his military basic training, he'll need to get all the paperwork to place you in the military benefits tracking system called the Defense Eligibility Enrollment Reporting System, or DEERS.

Once your partner completes his training, he or his command will send you a DD Form 1172-2, Application for ID Card Registration/DEERS. It looks like this.

DD Form 1172-2 is usually good for 90 days from the date of signature. If you cannot complete the process within 90 days, you must wait until your service member is with you or receive a new DD Form 1172-2.

In addition to the DD Form 1172-2, you will need your marriage certificate and ID. The rules say you need two valid and expired forms of identification, but I'll bring more in case one isn't available. There's no point in making an extra trip if you don't have to.

You must bring this form to the ID card office. You do not need to go to the ID office for your service branch; you can go to any ID office. The ID office may be called by different names depending on the branch. They might be called Pass and ID, or RAPIDS office, or DEERS office, or something else.

To find your nearest office, go to the online ID Card Office Locator. Enter your zip code. If you can't find an office in your immediate area, increase the distance a little until you find something.

Once you find them, contact them. Ask if they require an appointment or if you can come without an appointment. If they accept walk-ins without an appointment, find out if there are specific days or times. Ask their time. Ask for specific directions to their location – GPS and online maps don't always work on military bases. Ask if you need to go through a security gate, if you need to get a visitor's pass, or if there's anything you need to say to the gate guard.

If they need an appointment, you can make an appointment while you're on the phone, or you may need to return to the ID Card Office Locator for an appointment.

Once you have the necessary documents to get your ID, as well as an appointment or visiting time, make sure you know where you are going and allow extra time for delays. Busy offices may not accept you if you are late.

Obtaining your military ID will give you installation access, allow you to use commissaries and exchange retail locations, and give your medical providers the information they need to process your medical care claims under your Tricare coverage. You don't need to get your ID right away, but you may want to get it as soon as possible, especially if you rely on it for your health insurance. You have insurance without a card, but it's easier for your doctor to bill Tricare with your ID information.
