Decatur Army Recruiting Station - Olivia Lyles, a senior at Austin High School in Decatur, became a colonel in the school's JROTC program in May 2021. She has been an active member of the program since her sophomore year. most.

"I chose JROTC because I didn't want any other electives," Lyles said. However, she did not choose this program because of her lack of knowledge or direction in life. As she prepares to graduate on May 26, her future is ready.

Lyles' plans include earning a bachelor's degree in exercise and health sciences at Jacksonville State University and pursuing a master's degree in physical therapy in graduate school.

Graduation Season Busy Time Of Year For Military Recruiters

Lyles is not only active in JROTC, but also an all-around good student. Between trail running and basketball, community volunteering, and serving as a waitress at Chili's, she also participated in Calhoun Community College's dual enrollment program. Her GPA has remained constant at 3,965. You can find her at the gym when she needs a break.

Her activities and GPA earned her a three-year scholarship to JSU. She was in the top 10% of her graduating class.

"JROTC gave me structure in my life," Lyles said. "It helped me overcome my fears and made me a better person, a better leader.

"It gave me the discipline to get up, work, move." That mindset will no doubt help her future career, as well as the National Guard.

Upskilling And Recruiting Veterans For Manufacturing Careers

Lyles is passionate about helping others, and JROTC provides many opportunities for this. Austin JROTC students participated in the Special Olympics in Huntsville and laid a wreath at Roselawn Cemetery during Christmas through the All America Wreaths program. The team also participated in Redstone JROTC Day 2019, the last time it was held before the pandemic.

Lyles has demonstrated leadership skills since his freshman year. She started out as a sergeant and quickly became squad leader that year. As a sophomore, she rose from sergeant to second lieutenant and platoon leader, leading 20 other cadets.

Her senior year, she began as a cadet captain in charge of logistics, and by the end of the year she was named a colonel in the 80 student program.

As a practitioner, her fondest memory is meeting practitioners from other schools at regional competitions. Not only did the competition provide a great experience, but it also allowed her to "make friends and exchange ideas".
