We'll go over what you need to do to buy a gun in the state and all the rules about what to do with the gun once you bring it home.

The Certificate of Eligibility is a purchase permit that all prospective purchasers of firearms must obtain from the Special Firearms and Licensing Unit (SLFU) before a licensed firearms dealer or private dealer is allowed to sell the firearm.

The permit process takes some time because part of the application requires you to show proof of taking a firearms safety course. You want to make sure you have everything and your permit before you run to the gun store.

If this is not your first rodeo and you also have a permit to carry then this will also work in place of the certificate of eligibility.

Once you get your permit, it's a straight trip to your local gun store to pick up that shiny 1911 you've been eyeing.

Even if you decide to buy your gun from a private seller instead of your local gun store, you should still stop by the gun store. Every transfer of firearms must have a background check performed by a licensed firearms dealer or a federal firearms licensee (FFL).

Connecticut went a step further and any gun sales must have permission from the SLFU. In fact, the state tracks all sales of firearms between individuals, whether you bought them from a gun store, gun show, or your friend who sold his Sig that only put 200 rounds through it.

If you wish to sell your pistol, you must also obtain a special permit to do so and obtain approval from the SLFU for the sale.

For those of you under 21, you can still temporarily use a handgun for target shooting as long as it is under the supervision of a person who is authorized to carry a gun. This means your parents (or just your friends over 21!) can let you test their guns at the range so you know what gun to buy for your 21st birthday!

Gun Owners, Rights Groups Challenge Connecticut Firearms Ban

Along with all the requirements to buy a handgun, Connecticut also has some conditions that will prohibit you from buying a handgun outright.

Buying a long gun like an AR-15 or shotgun involves a similar process to buying a handgun, but there are some big kinks to watch out for.

Now, if you think you can get past the ban on pistol-caliber assault weapons, think again.

If you are one of the lucky ones who owned an assault weapon before October 1, 1993, and received a certificate of ownership from the Connecticut State Police before July 1, 1994, then you can continue to legally own an assault weapon.

Assault Weapons Not Protected By Second Amendment, Federal Appeals Court Rules

As long as you legally own the "assault weapon" with the above requirements, you can transfer the gun to someone else when you die, with or without a will, as long as the new owner also receives a certificate of possession.

Although you are allowed to own an assault weapon, the only situations in which you may carry it are:

If you're not lucky enough to have an assault rifle before the cutoff dates, you can still make a similar, law-abiding rifle. Check out our post on how to build an AR-15 "without parts" to learn all the ways you can still own a rifle without turning it into an assault weapon.

Without a permit, you can only take one gun into your home. You can't even bring a handgun to the range without a carry permit.

Gun Control: Which Guns Are Legal In Ohio, Kentucky? Are Assault Rifles Legal?

Although you can get an open carry permit, the Board of Firearms Permit Examiners charged with denying and revoking permits says that "every effort must be made to ensure that no firearm is visible or held in such a way that it alarmed the people watching."

Of all these laws just to get the gun out of the house, a concealed carry permit seems to be the least of the problems. But of course, the state puts a few hurdles in your way before issuing a concealed carry permit.

So for those rare occasions when the gun is not holstered, make sure you put it somewhere safe that no one can reach.

In fact, even a BB gun should be kept in the truck or in a closed container when transporting it in a vehicle.

Muzzleloader rifles and shotguns are considered "unloaded" even though a charge may be in the bore, as long as there is no powder in the firing pan or percussion cap on the nipple.

And just to keep you on your toes, Connecticut decided that shotguns and rifles must also be unloaded when carrying them on a snowmobile.

In addition to permit requirements, .50 cal armor-piercing bullets or .50 cal incendiary bullets are prohibited in Connecticut.

Connecticut is one of the states that limits magazine capacity to 10 rounds. It is illegal to possess magazines that hold more than 10 rounds unless you owned a "large capacity" magazine before April 5, 2013 and registered the magazines by January 1, 2014.

The use of reasonable physical force, including deadly force, is only justified in defense of yourself or another person if you reasonably believe that deadly force is necessary to prevent an offender from attempting to commit arson or any other crime violent in your home or workplace.

Of course, just because you can be justified in using deadly force, that doesn't mean you have to use deadly force. Always use your best judgment to decide what amount of force is necessary to protect yourself.

Although the Castle doctrine is enshrined in law, Connecticut has no right to your own basic law. In fact, state law specifically requires you to retreat if you can avoid the use of force with absolute safety by retreating, unless you are inside your home or workplace.

There are many laws to know about being a responsible gun owner in the state of Connecticut. Fortunately, if you follow all the rules we've outlined, you should be safe and ready to protect your loved ones from the bad guys.

And of course, even if there are no laws against keeping your guns in a safe place, it's generally always a good idea to store your firearms in a safe place, with a strong safe or with gun cabinet.

For those of you who have several guns to keep away from prying eyes, a gun safe will get the job done quickly.
