The story of Heckler & Koch (HK) begins immediately after World War II, when Oberndorf, Germany, falls under the control of the French army. The French army confiscated equipment from the Mauser factory, which had produced 70,000 rifles a month during the war, and put it on a train bound for France. Before the train was dispatched, three Mauser engineers - Edmund Heckler, Theodor Koch and Alex Seidel - seized some of the equipment and hid it until 1955, when the West German arms embargo ended. Heckler & Koch's new pistol, the VP9, follows in the footsteps of the VP70 and other polymer pistols. The VP9, introduced in 2014, uses a polymer frame that houses the magazine and fire control group. The composition of forged steel includes a cold-angled barrel. Cold hammer forging creates barrels at temperatures lower than traditional hot forging, with fifty tons of pressure applied to each hammer, creating a strong, durable barrel. Heckler & Koch claims that the individual VP9s fired more than 90,000 rounds each during internal testing, which should be enough for even the most demanding users.
The VP9 is a trigger gun, meaning it uses a trigger instead of a traditional trigger to release the bullet and send the bullet flying. In a bolt-action rifle, a spring-loaded firing pin reverses some of the trigger travel, and the rest of the action occurs when the trigger is pulled.
There are many advantages of the gun. First, accidentally dropping a gun with a loaded cartridge will not cause a fire because there is no movement of gunpowder to fill it. This eliminates the traditional basis of negligence. Also, shooters don't have long ambitions for other so-called semi-automatic rifles, where one pulls the trigger and ejects the gun. Unlike most shotguns, which tend to be heavy, long pulls and pulls, the VP9's trigger is described as short and light, similar to a short single-action rifle, with little recoil.

The VP9 has a sleek and modern look, due in part to the lack of a full trigger on the rear of the gun. The gun features state-of-the-art ergonomics, meaning the backstrap and grip can be swapped out to create a gun that fits more comfortably in a small or large hand, regardless of thickness. The rifle features three back panels and six grip panels, allowing for twenty-seven different ergonomic adjustments.
Like most conventional modern 9mm pistols, the VP9 magazine stores bullets in two "double" side rows. One of the minor ones is that the VP9 magazine can only hold fifteen rounds, while competitors in the same class, the Glock 19 and Sig Sauer P320, can hold seventeen rounds.
The other big question is why was the VP9 never seriously considered as part of a competitive Modular Handgun System (MHS) for the US Army? VP9 meets most, if not all, of the MHS program requirements. The MHS competition, which Sig Sauer won in January 2017, defined modern ergonomic design. Indeed, the Glock, which does not have such a system, is considered a more durable competitor than the VP9. The VP9 even has a shorter, smaller version, the VP9SK, to meet the needs of a heavy pistol. We may never know if HK pushed the VP9 heavily or if the Army abandoned it.
The Heckler & Koch VP9 pistol has not received many military orders - it is mainly in service with the police in the USA and Europe. However, this is a new design that has global appeal and may be on the market for many years to come.

This is an elite shooting specialist. Anyone thinking of expanding their HK lineup should seriously consider a specialist, especially if you like the USP platform.
